As consumers increasingly prioritize health, there’s growing interest in foods and beverages that offer scientifically backed benefits, particularly those labeled as functional foods. In Japan, one of the world’s most rapidly aging countries, the decline in bone density that comes with age is a significant concern, leading to a higher risk of osteoporosis and fractures. This has fueled demand for products that support bone health.
In response to this trend, Showa Sangyo is set to launch a new functional beverage, “Bone Care Drink Yogurt Flavor” (100ml PET), nationwide on September 1st. This drink, which marks the company’s first venture into functional beverages, utilizes maltobionic acid produced by the group’s Sun-Ei Toka company.
Maltobionic acid has been shown to enhance the absorption of calcium and iron from meals, support the maintenance of bone density as it declines with age, and improve digestive health. The drink is tailored to appeal to women and others concerned about bone health, providing a yogurt-flavored beverage that’s easy to enjoy daily.
Packaged in a 100ml bottle with a one-year shelf life at room temperature, the drink is priced at 216 yen, including tax. It will be available at supermarkets and drugstores, with additional options for purchasing 10-bottle cases through co-ops and online channels.
