The World’s First “Microwaveable Canned Food” — Daiwa Can’s Range de Can™

Overview

Tokyo, Japan — Daiwa Can Company has announced the successful development of Range de Can™, the world’s first canned food that can be safely heated directly in a microwave oven. The innovation was showcased at a recent media event in Tokyo, marking a major step toward creating a new category of “microwaveable canned food.”

Technology: The “Non-Spark Cap™”

At the heart of this breakthrough is the company’s proprietary Non-Spark Cap™, a specially designed attachment fitted to the bottom of the can. This component prevents sparks caused by the interaction between microwaves and metal surfaces during heating—a long-standing safety obstacle in microwaving metal containers. By maintaining an optimal distance between the can’s base and the microwave oven’s bottom surface, the Non-Spark Cap™ disperses concentrated microwave energy, effectively suppressing sparks and enabling safe heating without transferring contents to another container.

Addressing Unmet Consumer Needs

Traditionally, consumers who wanted to enjoy hot canned food had to transfer the contents to a separate dish before microwaving—a step that often fell short of the convenience demanded by today’s evolving lifestyles. Recognizing this gap, Daiwa Can launched the Range de Can™ development project in February 2021 with the aim of creating a canned food product that “anyone can heat easily in a microwave.” After four years of development, the company has achieved its goal.

From Concept to Market

Daiwa Can is now accelerating efforts toward mass production and plans to propose the technology to other canned food manufacturers, noting that the system is compatible with existing production lines. The company’s vision is to establish a completely new category in the global food market—“canned foods that taste best when warmed.”
