FamilyMart announced on the 22nd that it will be selling “Daitai (alternative) seafood maki,” which uses substitute foods such as salmon roe, sea urchin, and crab, from the 28th at approximately 4,900 stores in the Kanto region and six prefectures. Salmon roe was replaced with vegetable oil derived from soybeans, sea urchin was replaced with pollack paste, and crab was replaced with crab-flavored kamaboko.
The company’s aim is to contribute to sustainable fishing, and the company says, “Compared to livestock products, seafood alternatives are still less well known.We hope this will help people learn more about them.”
The product contains two rolls of “salmon roe” and “sea urchin,” each of which also has “crab” and cucumber wrapped in it. Not only the appearance, but also the texture and taste are close to the real thing. The price is 398 yen.
